November 3

Today I'm showing you all my pump and my site. Sorry about the fat and the stretch marks. One thing the pump will allow me to do a lot easier is exercise when it's all fine tuned.

So, this is the pump I got. It's an Animas Ping. This gives me my insulin through the little site that's stuck on my skin! I change it out every 2 to 3 days. It has a tiny tube that stays in me called the cannula.

The pump will give me insulin in two ways. The first is called a basal dose-which gives me insulin (1.05 units for me) every hour spread through the hour. The second is bolus-which I tell it to give me when I eat for when I need to correct a blood sugar. I used to get my basal through Lantus (a 24 hour insulin) and I still get my bolus from Apidra (a rapid acting insulin that lasts for about 2-3 hours) though I used to get it through syringes up to 8 times a day.

I will be working with a blood glucose management team for the next 6 weeks and I talked with her today. She will be fine tuning my pump so that it can help me keep my blood sugars under better control.
